This is one of Robert's most enjoyable books

I have always wanted to read this book, and this past January I finally settled down for the good, long read that is Les Miserables. I was anticipating being bored and having to wade through lots of dense descriptions. While these dense descriptions do exist in abundance, and there were certainly sections of somewhat excruciating historical descritions, I was awed by the richness of Hugo's prose. I like to joke that he didn't write a single sentence that didn't have a minimum of 5 adjectives, but really, that was part of what made it so enjoyable. The book I read following Les Mis couldn't begin to compare to the hearty language of Hugo. Although reading it felt like a marathon at times, when I finished I felt a sense of sadness that this constant companion of elegant prose had come to an end. Read it and savor it. Do not rush through it. It deserves plenty of time.
