I was originally bouncing between a 4 and a 3 star rating and ended up firmly at a 3. While this book is very interesting as both a glimpse into the past and for it's affect on the American public it has some fatal flaws when read today. First, Ms. Friedan really needed an editor to take a blade to her manuscript. It's repetitive in general and her individual sentences suffered as well. Second, there are two VERY offensive sections in the book that could have been cut in their entirety. The portion where she discusses homosexuality and the entire chapter where she compares the situation of the American housewife with concentration camps. Yes, not being able to finish college and pursue your own career is so similar to having everyone you know and love killed and burned and living in a camp where you could be killed at any minute because a guard is bored. So really a fat 1/4 of the book could have been cut and we would have been left with a stronger work.
I like my science told through the context of people and history. So I like Steven Johnson, although I wish he'd edit himself a bit. He repeats himself too much.
