I read this book after I'd watched the movie. So I already knew what was going to happen before it happened. It was still engaging and moved at a good pace. It was nice to have all the extra little details the book had and to read more fully fledged characters - especially peripheral characters.
The book chronologically explores the history of the ancient Israelites, comparing the biblical account to the archaeological evidence. The content is interesting enough, but each chapter is organized in roughly the same way, and it eventually becomes monotonous. my favorite quote: "There they engaged in animal husbandry, which has always been a more resilient, if less comfortable, way of life."
