I looked and this book was published over 40 years ago. I hope that explains the incredible class consciousness and snobbery of Rev. Archery and his son. It really is a good mystery. Wexford is perfect as a police officer whose judgement is being questioned by an amateur. Rendell makes it believable that someone would attribute so much to heredity, and why they would fear their child marrying the child of a murderer, instead of accepting the girl as what she's made of herself..
Sounds like fun to read/listen to.
Ok, I'm officially hooked on this series now, even though I need to read a number of other books prior to getting back to it. Brian was smart to release the first book in the series, Private free on Kindle to attract new fans like me. I recently read a few YA novels and was not that impressed. However, the Private series reminds me of the YA that I had difficulty finding to read when I was in junior high. There weren't many books out there like this at the time. Nevertheless, I'm glad to have found these small treasures now.
