just read this for the Nth time; the novella is exquisite and tidy and funny and insightful, and it's one of my favorites.

Chips is the son of Sergeant Regan, a Detective Inspector of the Essex police and he desperately wants to buy a stereo from a school-mate. In order to afford it, he takes on a paper round at Nuggets News - with a bike loaned from PC Gentry - where he meets up with Maggie, Jeremy, Janie, Charlie the Chopper and Smirker Nugget. Bike thieves are at work locally and when Janie’s bike is stolen, Chips and his new friends are quickly on the case. Told in a brisk, no-nonsense style, this doesn’t gloss over some of the dark points of childhood but works because of that. Published in 1979, I think the 10-year-old me would have enjoyed it and, as an adult, I liked its direct style, clever characterisations and nice use of location. A good read.
