A lovely little philosophy book where Lindbergh is reminded of some valuable life lessons while spending a solitary vacation by the ocean. Each shell she finds on the beach serves as a metaphor for such things as patience, grace, the art of solitude and contemplation—the importance of a simple life. She applies this to relationships and life’s struggles. I like her analogy of comparing a good relationship to a pattern like a dance. Partners don’t need to hold on tightly because they move confidently in the same pattern. Each cycle of the tide is valid as each cycle of a relationship is valid. The shells remind her that the sea recedes and returns eternally. She is reminded by the shells she takes home with her to see with ‘island’ eyes—to maintain a balance of physical, intellectual and spiritual life. This is a book to savor and reread often.
