I wish I hadn't given my copy to one of my students. I want to read it again and again.
really should be 3.5 stars... There's no doubt that the language was lyrical -- sometimes overwrought, but touching so close to the bone on other occasions... My problem was that the book just was in love with its own voice... The story wasn't difficult -- artistic girl in a small high school has a long term, artistic boyfriend, falls in violent love with an older but more importantly magnetic brooder, loses her way, falls in with the 'less than zero' crowd, and is ultimately redeemed insofar as redemption is possible or necessary. So 600 pages? Only one explanation -- logophilia :-)...
