A nice piece of escapist fantasy. (Book 2 of 5)

I've got the Oxford edition and the Penguin one, and the Oxford one is much better. It's hard work of course, completely ridiculous, frustrating and morally moribund, but the lasting sensation the book gives is joy. With other books the feeling fades once you've finished, with Ulysses it's like standing next to a fire, and when you turn away you take the heat of the glow with you. I'd like to say I think about it every day. I don't, but most days. I'd swap a punctuation mark in Ulysses for pretty much all literature written after 1950.

Oh the dichotomy that is Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis, one part elegant-glamorous celebrity, the other tormented-shy child. Without falling prey to rumors and conspiracy theories, the author valiantly provides a thoroughly researched biography of the beloved First Lady. First-hand accounts of Jackie from those who knew her best fill this book. It is not always a pretty picture; friends paint her as alternatingly embracing then coldly distant, worldly then relying on any powerful man for the basics of life. Regardless of her need for male approval and willingness to ignore the philandering ways of her father and two husbands; Jackie emerges as an intelligent, class act whose interests, advice, and book recommendations are worth noting. She built her life around interesting and powerful people; her story is more than intriging. At the very least this biography has led me to a new reading list as so many greats were mentioned in this book as influential to America's Queen.
