** spoiler alert ** The characters in this book are so well written, they don't just make you like them, they make you feel. They make you care. I didn't just sympathize with them, I empathized. When Janie read the green notebook, even though, like Janie, I knew what was coming, I cried. It was awful to have to think of what Janie would be going through because of the "gift" that she has. And at such a young age. I thought, with as old as Martha Stubin was when she died, that Janie would have more time to be "normal". To know that she can have a long life, but will have to live it gnarled and blind really tears me up. I still love the relationship between Janie and Cabel. They each have their own issues that make it hard to be together, but find that they are much worse apart. I am just glad that they got back together. I couldn't imagine Janie having to go through everything alone. This is the type of book, that once you finish reading it, you still aren't done with it. It keeps you thinking long after the last page is turned. The only thing bad I have to say about it, is that I have to wait until next year for Gone to come out so I can find out what happens.
Tolstoy is one of my favorite Russian writers. This book reads like a Harlequin romance novel. Tolstoy nails the voice of a woman in Anna. I listened to an abridged version of this in high school. Finally reading the whole novel, I remain in love. One of my favorite books of all time.
Such a great story. Love that I read it for the first time at the age of 27.
