I don't believe anyone could tell you the plot of a Jasper Fforde book in anything shorter than the time that Ffforde takes and no one could tell them so well. This tells the adventures of Thursday Next (that's really her name) who lives in an alternative England (not exactly the UK as Wales is a spearate Socialist Republic), whose father works for the chronoguard and tries to keep the French from changing English history. The bulk of Thursday's adventures concern her dealings with the demonic Acheron Hades, who has found a way to get inside books and has kidnapped Jane Eyre. This has coused the book to stop suddenly (it's told from the first person pov) and has all of England up in arms. Fforde obviouslly loves books can write believable heros and villans and is immensely funny.
