A lovely plot and beautifully written. Being a fan of Jane Austin's heroines, I tended to dislike Astrid's character somewhat. She lacked the strength and spark that I look for in a heroine. However, that is why I liked this novel. It was something different from my usual choice of literature. It was worth the read and I can understand why this book received such rave reviews from critics.
I read this as an adult. I think I read it after seeing the movie. I really enjoyed the story, partly because it is bittersweet and partly because of the unique characters. The reading level of this appropriate for middle school students, but some high school students would enjoy it as a easy / fast read.
