I never thought I'd read this book. I resisted drinking the Twilight Kool-Aid. But my daughter was begging me to let her read it so I needed to read it first. I thought I would hate it- I've always snubbed my nose at romance novels and vampire books?- I think I read one once about 15 years ago and it was ridiculous. So I fully expected Twilight to be dripping with Cheez Whiz. Well, much to my surprise, I enjoy a bit of the Whiz after all. You have to give Stephenie Meyer some credit- women have fallen for Edward Cullen. It's hard not to. Maybe it's because of the fact that I haven't read romance novels that I liked it- I didn't catch all the cliches- I merely got swept up in the story. And for those leary about reading vampire books, it's not overly "vampiry". At least not in the way you think of sleeping-in-the-coffin type vampires. True, the writing is not great. Many passages seemed forced and awkward and I found myself re-writing many sentences in my head. But this book isn't marketed to be the Great American Novel. It's an escape story, a guilty pleasure, a delicious piece of chocolate. Don't pick it up expecting Steinbeck. I'd let young people read it with a few disclaimers. It's kind of like reading Snow White to little kids. This isn't real life. There's no Prince Charming and there's no Edward Cullen, but it's okay to indulge in a little fantasy once in a while.
Definitely in my top five right now.
