** spoiler alert ** SPOILERS IN PARENTHESES BELOW. I really enjoyed this book, both for its "print is dying" journalism theme and for its execution. And Then We Came to the End, is frequently held up as an excellent example of office-centric fiction, yet I would offer The Imperfectionists as a much better example. Each of the characters felt whole and human, with both work-related and personal conflicts, and just about all of the narratives could have stood alone as short stories. The psychological manipulations that characters used against one another were simply fascinating. I liked Rachman's symbolism (Oliver Ott's dead dog Schopenhauer, Jimmy's sad, rambling note, poor Winston Cheung's abandoned field of primatology) but it felt a bit obvious; no matter, though, since it was an enjoyable read that I'd recommend to anyone interested in the decline of the print media. What I'd like to know is how a 35-year-old writer could write so convincingly about middle-aged characters; I believed every word.
