I was surprised to see the high ratings for this collection. I thought it was really uneven. A few of the stories stood out: the editor wrote a short essay on immigrants and convenience food, Letty Cottin Pogrebin has a moving essay and there is an Amy Bloom short story. A lot of the pieces are depressing and while I understand that the post-war generation of Jews was that much closer to the Holocaust and pogroms, I think the writing in many of these essays and stories just isn't that great.
