This volume was much more to my liking than #2, with more entertaining developments for Tony. His new relationship with Amelia is cute, and Mason returns to the book with hilarious results. We get a bit more backstory on Tony's family life (which has some serious soap opera twists), and the whole thing ends on a nice double cliffhanger. Again, this volume has more self contained adventures which I prefer for this series. Also it has more with Poyo, the planet's most badass chicken (who wears a luchadore mask!), who never fails to crack me up.
Meh. Not Hornby's best work. The characters and plot are pretty bland. Because the teenage-boy protagonist is not too bright, he tends to see situations at a superficial level even when it's obvious to the reader that things are more complex. This has the potential to lead to some interesting insights but never does. Slam has none of the poignancy of About a Boy or the cleverness of How to be Good.
