This really was an amazing book, although this is not a book for everyone. It covers some pretty horrific subject matter and there is one scene in the book that is definitely horrifying, even though it does not give any details whatsoever. I couldn't even comprehend living in a society where "Unwinding" is accepted. This is one of those books where you can't stop thinking about it after you've read it, and it certainly brings to mind all the horrific things that ARE happening in our society today. The author doesn't hide the fact that this story stems from the highly debated topic of abortion. "The Bill of Life", which is mentioned on the first page of the book, states that "human life may not be touched from the moment of conception until a child reaches the age of thirteen. However, between the ages of thirteen and eighteen, a parent may choose to retroactively "abort" a child . . . " -- this is called "Unwinding". (Beginning of Rant) Yes, everyone, this is totally wrong and sick. But how much more than abortions of babies? Our society is accepting of, or at any rate, tolerating this. What would be the difference if the accepted age of abortion was pushed forward a few months? Years? Would it be any different? In the wise words of Dr. Seuss: "A person's a person, no matter how small". (End of Rant) This is an excellent book, if you are ready for the subject material, I highly recommend it!

Pelikan does a good job of presenting the many sides of the doctrinal issues of the time period.
