I am not a huge historical fiction junkie, there's been some that I read and really loved, but there's also been times where I've found that I have a hard time getting into a story and the dialogue easily bores me. That wasn't the case for me with The Vespertine from the beginning where we meet Amelia I knew that I was going to enjoy this one. The writing flowed easily for me, I didn't have a hard time at all getting into this one and I loved that the paranormal aspect was woven perfectly with the historical fiction part of the story. The story starts off in Autumn where Amelia is currently living in Maine with her brother and sister in law. We see as her brother treats her like she's a damaged and crazy woman and locks her up in the attic. We get to see the reason of why he's accusing Amelia of this when the story flashes back to the Summer that Amelia spent in Baltimore with her cousin Zora, where her brother sent her to find a husband. During that summer Amelia finds that she has the ability to see visions of the future, and I liked that the ability took time to develop and that they were also very detailed that I was able to get a pretty clear picture of what Amelia was seeing and feeling. Amelia also finds love that summer but it's not with the kind of person that her brother had in mind, it's with Nathaniel someone that doesn't really have a clear future and lives life pretty much to the fullest and takes in one day at a time. He doesn't have a very good reputation and he's not high in the society circle but Amelia finds herself immediately drawn to him and so does the reader. I really liked Nathaniel, he was different, and seemed very mysterious. We soon find out that he also has a secret ability of his own that seems even more magical than Amelia's. I really couldn't get enough of The Verpertine, I loved the mysterious characters, the fun and adventurous ones like Amelia and her cousin Zora. The well written and described mannerisms and beliefs that they had in that time mixed with the paranormal part of it that just kept getting better and caught my attention until the end. I think the story wrapped up nicely for a stand alone, but I would definitely take another one. I did find that I wanted to know more about Nathaniel, he remained a mystery to me at the end and would definitely love to find out more about him and what Amelia's future holds next. The Vespertine was one that I would have read in one sitting if I hadn't had to read it on my PC, it was effortless and also beautifully written. I would recommend this one to everyone even if you're not a big historical fiction fan you won't find it hard to fall in love with this story.
