Cool short story! Can't say anything without giving it away.
This was my second time through with this book and I loved it more if that's possible. The main character is both sympathetic and intriguing. The atmosphere of the story is both intensely familiar and slightly strange, much like the Mirror-World feel of going to other countries that are so much like home but just slightly off due to a slightly different aesthetic. A beautiful and poignant story.
It's a lively and colorful description of the financial markets in Victorian England, and in particular the role of the Bank of England in maintaining financial stability. Bagehot is the first to articulate the idea of the "lender of last resort," which is just what the Fed (and other central banks) have been doing in recent months--though much expanded in scale and scope. Much has changed since then, of course, but not as much as you might think. Plus, who knew the Peel Act of 1844 could be so interesting?
I wonder if I would ever have the guts to run away and come back!
