I believe this was summer reading. I'm not sure. I do know that it was for my American literature class in high school, so it was either just before or during my sophomore year. I remember liking the love story and I watched the Liam Neissen movie shortly after reading it one afternoon at Jenn Mabius's house. Last year I did an awesome project with this book. I had the students read this book and several other stories and poems about winter. Then I had them take pictures of their Maine winter surroundings. They chose the three best pictures, and wrote up how those pictures connected to the readings. Most of them really liked the project and I got some awesome work.
This book totally rocked me. It is to most other astrology books what fresh-squeezed organic orange juice is to Tang. Some of the claims it made about my sign shocked me so much I had to put the book down to digest them and pick it up again later. I've read certain sections over and over again and every time I find something new and valuable that I never really noticed in the text or never considered fully. I'd say this is one of my 'desert island' books, except that good books make me realize how intricate human beings are and how incricately linked we are to other human beings, so being on a desert island in this desert-island-for-the-rest-of-my-life scenario would probably drive me to find a way off the island or kill myself trying, not sitting around reading books. Anyway...read this book. You won't regret it.
I really enjoyed this book a lot. I love any book during this time period, whether it be pre, during, or post WWII. But I loved the characters and how unique the writing style was. I think anything with a good quirky, entertaining character is great, this one has several! Very much worth reading.
