This book offers a pretty radical reinterpretation of pre-columbian American history. The most stunning revelation for me was the sophistication of native societies and technologies, which goes so far beyond anything I had ever imagined that its verging on science fiction. For example, one chapter posits that the New England and Amazonian forests are the result of careful agricultural manipulation- burning, crop selection etc. Another goes into the language features encoded in Incan string systems. Anyway, I won't tell you how it ends (smallpox> >subjugation>destruction>USA!USA!) cause I want you to read it for yourself.
