Our book club just read this book. It reminded me a lot of The Glass Castle, but this one was much more depressing. It was heartwrenching how the author and her sister had to take care of themselves when they were young. Their mother was so mentally ill she was a danger to herself and to them. Also very frustrating that there didn't seem to be any services to help the mother get well or to take care of the girls. The author speaks very lovingly of her mother despite it all. I think she understands that it is an illness and not something her mother could help. As someone else in our group said, maybe this would have been easier to read in the summer and not in cold and cloudy February!
