Yeah, free black families owned black slaves in the south. Not enough of a premise to keep me interested. Good characters but I found the first third of the book to be confusing. I did, however, get into it and made it to the end. He does not have the beautiful prose of morrison, but still for juggling a large cast of characters and a difficult historical period I give it four stars. Still I prefer reading Frederick Douglass.
