Love the premise and voice. Content warning (because it was a surprise to me): animal abuse; rape; perverted old man fantasies about teenagers.
For me this was a so-so book describing the story of a Nigerian girl in Nigeria and in UK. Although it is a very sad story it did not grip me.
I read this in eighth grade. I found out some years later that we read an abridged version. While I believe the language was the same as or very similar to the original, there were parts of the story that were removed. For that reason, I am interested in rereading the full version at some point. I've also found when I reread other books what I read when I was younger (like Ethan Frome, The Scarlet Letter, and To Kill a Mockingbird) I see them in a totally new light. Like Romeo and Juliet, I believe that I was not frustrated by this text at the time because I was used to there being a lot of words I didn't know and reading going slowly.
a rich mood of a somewhat passive Southern culture - overwritten in places, but a stylish, honest writer
