This is a story of transformation through education. The magnificent transformation is spectacular, from an uneducated criminal to advocate of racial freedom and equality, despite his upbringing of racism and oppression from whites. The life of Malcolm X is reflective of hope, while the death of Malcolm X is evident that the fear of racial equality exists. Reading this was rather painful at times, which I now feel is precisely why it is so important to read. Malcolm embodied the evils of racism, but most importantly he is evidence of how we are capable of overcoming them.

Because reviews of this book used the word 'charming', I almost didn't buy it! - but I am very glad I did. The story is beautifully drawn, although there is steel underlying the charm as Booth grapples with important issues, including the Stolen Generations. The characters are both quirky and compelling, and the plot so gripping that I read the last half of the book in one sitting in order to discover the fate of the protagonists.
