MY GOD was this book depressing. How is it that a book about ordinary folks living out their day to day lives in small town Maine leaves me feeling more hopeless than a book about genocide in Africa? Somehow each character's situation seems bleak and painful. I wasn't sure how to rate this. The stories (which all had some characters in common, thus giving the book a novel-ish flow) were well crafted and expressive. I do appreciate the writing style and the fantastic character development. But the heartbreaking lack of communication and connection between characters was enough to make me depressed every time I read it.
