This one is different from "The Chosen" in that the main character is more daring and independent and there is a greater emphasis on the interaction (and perhaps conflict) that occurs between art and religion. I loved this book for its inventiveness and thought-provoking plot.
The first Ann Zwinger book I've read - I've enjoyed most the way way her focus adjusts from the Micro to the Macro. Details about the various insects encountered, give way to early history of the canyon. Not to mention that the reference list added about 20 books to my "to-read" list
When I first read this book I was about the right age (12ish), but I re-read it recently and found that it is too young for me. It's a great tale for older grade-schoolers.
Such a beautiful book. And the relationship to MI (Ann Arbor) doesn't hurt.
