Ida Mae is a black girl in the World War II-era American South whose only dream is to fly. When she hears about the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) program, she thinks her dreams will come true, until she realizes they only want white women. Ida Mae has always been light-skinned enough to pass as white, and she decides to take that step to achieve her dream. This was heartbreaking and awesome. It managed to cut through my obscuring layer of white privilege to really show me the emotional and practical aspects of passing in a way I'd never understood before. The way that Ida Mae's relationships with her friends and family back home change after she joins the WASP are painful. The characters we meet in the WASP are fully rendered and awesome, but there is always that knowledge that their relationships with Ida Mae are based on a lie, and its difficult to know how they would change if they knew the whole truth.
Nice reading for young kids...kids who have read 20+ years of teen Titans comics!
