This is one of my favorite books. Written 10 years before the start of WWI it was written as a warning of the growing threat that was Germany. The friendship between Carruthers and Davies creates the backdrop for the North Sea sailing and spying adventure. There are a lot of technical terms and geographical landmarks that can make the book difficult to understand at times, but reading slow and trying to understand the technical words in context worked for me. (Also Google maps helped me get a sense of where they were and what the geography was like) I am a land locked girl from MN who's never been sailing, and I had no trouble following the story. It was well worth the trouble. If you like a challenging read and history and adventure/spy stories you'll probably enjoy this one.
I read this book when I was younger and didn't get a lot of it, so I probably need to reread it. I just remember I liked it because there were talking animals, and I cried when Boxer was shipped to the glue factory.
