This is an adventure story, enormous mountains, men who climb them, people who live in them, a country called Afghanistan post 9-11 all tell a swashbuckling story. There is a kidnapping, mystery, western journalists, war, love and puzzles to be solved. In the midst is Greg Mortenson building schools, one at a time, in inhospitable Afghanistan and Pakistan. Haunting self reliance as seen in "Out of the Wild", Jon Krakauer. Poetic descriptions helped me imagine mountains I may never see. This is an intriguing and inspirational story. Yes, the style of writing is run on, the chapters interminable. I speed read through much of it.
Beautiful novel about friendship, love, and growing up. I enjoyed reading about this time period, the beginning of the "Reeducation" period of the Communist Revolution and how two best friends grow up after being sent to the Chinese countryside.
