I received this book through the Goodreads First Reads Giveaway program. Marvelous book. It seems that everything Grant Achatz touches turns to gold, or rather, something delectable - dishes, restaurants and this book. The story shares so much of his personal life - growing up, starting work as a chef, etc - that you really get a sense of who he is. I feel like I could predict how Achatz would react in a given situations based on what I learned about him though this book - amazing. The story is written brillantly to bring in Achatz' business partner, Nick Kokonas, from the time that the two meet. It was nice to see the writing and perspectives move back and forth between these two men who created Alinea together as they explore this business venture and their personal relationship. I was captivated by the story and was rooting them on through it all. I loved learning about the ins and outs of restaurant design, investor meetings, etc, and how it all comes together to create a dining experience. Clever title - clever book. This is, overall, an uplifting book and a great read for anyone - foodies, cancer survivors, chefs, restaurateurs, Chicagoans, and beyond.
