At a small East Coast college, Richard becomes intrigued by a group of five students who make up the Greek program. They don't interact much with the rest of the student body, which Richard finds magnetic and intimidating. Having taken some Greek in high school, he eventually makes their acquaintance and gains admittance into their elite and sequestered circle. While these students are bright, interesting, and generally well-off, they also have some dark secrets to deal with...and Richard gets roped into the mysteries as well. While it took me forever to finish reading, this book is pretty engaging.

Since spring of 2005, this has remained my favorite book. It took me a bit to warm up to Kundera's style but I'm glad I stuck it out for this one. It's fantastic; dusky and tragic, sexy and brutally human. I continue to read it over and over again.

Please read this. Please see the film. Please don't read "on a beam of light," the sequel, which takes all the magic and mystery from this beautiful poignant hopeful novel.
