I love short stories in general, but this collection was so impressive to me. I was amazed by Lahiri's ability to understand and describe such complex, mature emotions and relationships. Her writing is fairly lyrical. I've read this book two or three times and find something I hadn't noticed each time. Another of the top ten.

Bernard Goldberg is a former CBS reporter who infuriated his bosses by going public with what he considered to be a hatchet job on then—GOP presidential candidate Steve Forbes and his flat tax proposal. Goldberg has since parlayed his excommunication from the mainstream media into a regular gig on Fox News, a series of books, and frequent appearances on popular talk radio programs, including Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity. His latest book is a slim effort, a quick read, and doesn't really cover any new ground for anyone who followed the campaign and isn't an Obamatron. Also Goldberg thinks he's funny, and he isn't. But it's worth reading for the main point: Goldberg says that while a consistent liberal bias in the media isn't new, it's certainly become overt. But he believes there is no organized conspiracy. Rather, he thinks it's a question of groupthink. Reporters and executives believe that their left of center beliefs are in fact centrist, so anything to the right is "conservative" or "fascist" (when they are feeling their oats). Anything to the left is "progressive." His argument is plainly stated (when he's not trying to be amusing) and his list of 10 questions that should have been asked of candidate Obama is spot on. Check it out.

I was impressed at how the novel ended; Liesel lived a long happy life with a family and Max surviving the concentration camp. This novel is hands down a must read for high school students. It elicits great debates and conversations for mature readers. The experience of Liesel watching her brother die on the train is an excellent segment piece for writing. Students would be astonished by the events in this story and the fact that there was a time in history when things like it took place.

I enjoy these a bunch. I love Harry's ironic sense of humor.
