Levin is a genius at horror. His straight-forward style initially lulls the reader into a false sense of security that quickly turns into a spiral descent into paranoia on the part of the reader with each passing page. I've mostly read his earlier works (Rosemary's Baby, Stepford Wives, A Kiss before Dying), and in all of them, I find myself yelling at the characters, telling them to please watch themselves, that those tiny strange details they've noticed and dismissed are really important. The movies of Levin's books, although good in some cases, disappointed me--there are subtleties to his style that I think are impossible to capture on film.
I learned more about leadership, power, compassion and coercion from this book than from many many others. This is how gifted ex-kids remember talking upon reflection. Beautiful. Speaker For The Dead. What a powerful concept!
