Wan't nearly as good as Lovely Bones, but still a well-told memoir.

BOOK REVIEW TOLLEY’S TAX GUIDE 2010-2011 By Arnold Homer, Rita Burrows, Claire Hayes, Ruth Newman, Francesca Lagerberg Tolley LexisNexis ISBN: 978-0-7545-3908-7 www.lexisnexis.co.uk AN OBJECTIVE, UNBIASED GUIDE THE FULL RANGE OF UK TAXES An Appreciation by Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor of Richmond Green Chambers ‘This is the book I always order each year. I would not be able to run my practice without it.’ This terse and appreciative comment by a typical chartered accountant typically spotlights the usefulness and indeed the necessity of acquiring this latest edition of Tolley’s Tax Guide, particularly if you’re involved professionally in any matters relating to UK tax. Unlike other tax guides which specialize in one or two categories of tax – stamp duties for example, Tolley’s Tax Guide covers the full range of UK taxes. Aimed primarily at tax advisers, the book is also deemed to be equally accessible to business and personal taxpayers -- and on the whole, we would agree, except that we’re sure the more accountancy knowledge you have, the easier the subject matter is to understand. Nonetheless, you can be confident that whatever your tax query, the answer resides in Tolley’s, whether you’re concerned with income tax and capital gains tax (self-assessment included), or corporation tax, inheritance tax, value added tax (VAT) and stamp taxes. Also covered are council tax, business rates, statutory sick pay, maternity, adoption, and paternity pay as well as NI contributions. Worked examples abound and are typical of the book’s practical approach. One of the well known and much depended upon range of Tolley’s annuals on tax, this guide is now in its twenty-ninth edition and bang up to date. The wealth of new material therein includes commentary on the third Finance Bill of 2010 published and in receipt of Royal Assent in autumn 2010. All chapters incorporate changes that have taken place since the last edition and most of the chapters feature ‘tax points’ which usefully point up the various tax planning opportunities available within the various categories of tax. Presented in straightforward language, this latest edition should prove indispensable in helping you gain a fuller understanding of tax, thus assisting you and those you advise in reducing tax bills. Certainly, the guide is made as easy to use as possible, with a terrific fifty page subject index, detailed table of contents and of course, tables of rates and allowances, plus handy summary of the main tax changes. In all, Tolley’s continues to live up to its reputation as ‘a great reference book’, well organized and packed with practical information and strategies… and certainly remaining a title you should re-order each year.
