Abby and I love this book--it has such a strong message about the importance of families. I really loved how Ivy's relationship with her older brother changed--at first she feels resentful and jealous of the attention he receives for his achievements in school and kung fu, but he's the one who tells her that dragons make their own luck and sends her to her gymnastics tournament with a really sweet good luck letter. I also loved the part when Ivy complains about eating Chinese food again from her grandparents' restaurant although she doesn't realize that her grandparents are in the room. She feels ashamed for days, but then her grandparents take her out to their favorite diner for cheeseburgers and fries. And the book ends with Ivy feeling both proud of her performance at her gymnastics meet and her large extended family. It's definitely one of my favorite American Girl books so far.
