** spoiler alert ** Shattering Glass by Gail Giles has a very strong and interesting premise: what would happen if a school's alpha male decides to give the class geek a popularity makeover? It's announced on page 1 that the geek ends up being killed by the alpha male and his friends, so the book is devoted to describing the events leading up to the geek's death. The story is told from the point-of-view of Young Steward, one of the friends involved in the geek's death and, it turns out, the only one to serve any real jail time for the crime. While I enjoyed the story, I found the dialogue to be a bit unbelievable - especially after reading Spanking Shakespeare and The Brothers Torres both of which had very realistic dialogue. Unfortunately, that disconnected me from the characters and made it difficult for me to fully believe in what was being described and I could never fully give myself over to the book.
