I read this story when I was a teenager (LOL, I borrowed it from my mom without her knowing it), and I've read it so many times since then, I have parts memorized. There is one scene that might be a trigger for some women and it's certainly nothing to romanticize, but the main characters are why I love this story so much. Though it's set in the early 1800s, Whitney is strong, feisty, and determined, and Clayton is just as strong-willed. He doesn't put up with her shenanigans, but she also teaches him how to relent.
