It's been a while since I read this one, but I remember it from a college class called "Race and the American Novel." It was among my favorites from that class, and very different from My Antonia. More psychologically intense.
like "the perks of being a wallflower," only not as good. sloppily written, mostly because it's the narrative of a high school student. i guess it takes skill to write how children speak. but a big let down after reading three very amazing joe meno books. this is a pretty accurate depiction of high school-- no matter if you were a punker, a catholic school student, whatever. the way friends come and go out of your life, as demonstrated in this book, is dead on.
