I got a kick out of this. I think the guy who started the Shit My Dad says twitter page modeled himself after how Sedaris portrays his parents. Rather than say, I love my mom, it is implicit when he writes about her bluntness and use of profanity in a very hard to describe way. Whose parents don't have some sort of ticks or quirks or things about them that are just simply the way they do things? While my dad never brought me and my brother along to a golf tournament simply for the excuse of pushing to the front of the viewing area (so "the kids" can see!), I can think of comparable experiences. Some of the better stories: Get Your Ya-Ya's Out! - his Greek grandma (dad's mom) comes to live with them. Pity David's mother. Cyclops - his dad's random lies to scare kids into being safe. Almost like when George Bluth tries to teach his kids a lesson. The Women's Open - the above mentioned golf story True Detective - Mom loves cop shows. David is falsely accused in a Sedaris family mystery. Dinah, the Christmas Whore - a hooker visits the Sedarises on Christmas Ashes - Very touching story about the last time his whole family was together before his mother's death. And not in that "this was written to be a touching story" way The Kings Speech was written to win an Oscar. Simply sincere. The only one I didn't like was COG, which seemed to go on and on, and didn't even raise a chuckle. Very unpleasant all around.
