Great story, but Rice is once again her own worst enemy in terms of writing. The overly florid descriptions and over-the-top sex scenes were generally unnecessary, but the story is an interesting one and I'd recommend reading for that reason alone.
Joyce Carol Oates is, indeed, a national treasure and this book is, basically, an astounding work of fiction. Be warned: It is traumatizingly vivid. It will take you out of your life. It may, possibly, ruin your life. You will need time to recover. It's just that good.
