I found this book irritating. I'm a fan of Eco's prose style and enjoyed some of his critical theory at university but found Foucault's pendulum too self-indulgent for my liking. The characters were rather lacking and large sections of dialogue felt laboured, designed purely to drive on the plot, rather than arising organically. If you are interested in medieval occult sects, I'd buy an academic book on the subject rather than trawl through this showy exhibition of arcane knowledge that's dramatically flaccid. It's not that bad I suppose, but I can't see who would enjoy it. A medievalist, I imagine but other than that even if you're a pretentious pub quiz bore, the paperback version has gold embossed lettering on the front cover, so you'd be better off reading the adult version of Harry Potter on the tube.
