American Psycho is probably the most controversial book i've ever read. it is definetely not for everyone. it has an extremely long and detailed narrative about everything, and is extremely mysoginistic. some of the knitty-gritty details of torture and murder make it hard to read, and i had to put it down quite a bit. that aside, it is also a book that describes an era (1980's wallstreet, to be exact), and the importance of not only fitting in, but blending in. how one can get away with anything because no one knows, or cares, who you really are. most of ellis' books involve drugs, sex, violence and complete indifference, but this particular book is also very psychological. you know pat bateman does these terrible things, but can you blame him? ellis has an interesting way of presenting pat bateman so that we eventually begin to feel indifferent towards his actions and understand why he tests the limits. it's also a very accurate account (at least by DSM standards) of what a classified "anti-social" person is.
