A collection of short stories all taking place in and around Dublin, Ireland. "The Lilac Bus" is itself a collection of short stories about a group of 7 people who share a minibus ride every Friday night home to Rathdoon for the weekend. Each story can stand on its own as that individual's reason for going home for the weekend. They're woven together by mentioning other members of the group but the mention is from that particular person's perspective. The remainder of the book is four other short stories, not related in any way. Stories about plans for a dinner party, a young woman getting her first flat (apartment), a family in which one daughter leaves the area for 14 months before returning home, and a family in which the father has been in an alcohol rehab. program. Enjoyed "Lilac Bus" more than the other stories. The different perspectives was interesting. Two of the final four stories I felt built up a big expectation and then ended very flat.

How did I graduate in English without reading this? I didn’t expect the venerated “Strunk and White” to be so funny; I devoured it as if it were a novel. The first part, thick with technical grammar rules, might be a turnoff for those who have forgotten what a nonrestrictive clause is, but was a good reminder of some basic rules. The fourth section, “Words and Expressions Commonly Misused” is where the fun begins -- laugh-out-loud examples of “hackneyed” and “bankrupt” expressions and unmasked derision for sloppy, imprecise, and pretentious writing. Now my task is to actually apply what I have just learned (and relearned). I’m sure Strunk and White would shake their heads at this review alone --”Didn’t she listen to a word we said?” Perhaps I shall begin by eradicating my preposterous inclination toward pretentiously loquacious sesquipedalianism....

dreamlike and very short. also sort of like a screenplay.
