The book killing Mr. Griffin by Lois Duncan is a big book of mysteries and adventure. A couple of students including one of Mr. Griffins favorites want to play there mean language arts teacher a prank. The students did not hope for the result they got. The students ONLY wanted to scare him... I love this book and recommend it to people that like mysteries.
Consider me officially a fan of Dennis Lehane. If he can spin a tale good enough so that I get past the first chapter (baseball, Babe Ruth) and the second chapter (policeman's boxing match), neither of which I'm interested in, then he's got a way with words. The story takes place in Boston, 1917 - 1918. It covers the policeman's strike, the great molassas spill, the flu pandemic, and how unions got their feet under them and started growing. I don't know much about this time in our history, so that in itself was fascinating. Highly recommended, especially in our current climate of political revolutions and state legislature fights over the collective bargaining power of the unions.
