** spoiler alert ** Maria chose this as a read aloud while we were studying the Medieval Times. The vocabulary is challenging and at times it was difficult to read, but has a fantastic ending. In the spring semester of Essentials, Maria was required to write a narrative essay on a portion of this story and was still able to remember many details of the story. However, she did not like the part of the story in which Merlin departed.
I think these arguments were valid about 10 years, when this book was written, but I'm not so sure they hold up over time. I do think it's a good book to discuss, though. And I bought it at CNN Center the day Hurricane Katrina hit, so I'll remember that for the rest of my life, too...
