At first I wasn't that impressed for some reason: I think I was concerned that the author was going to center his book around the idea of "Look, Western World, this is what it's like to live in a war-frought, Third World country." But of course I was very wrong, and this book goes much deeper than that: the main character's character is flushed out in a guilt-ridden contemplation of his own strength of character in a world where social hierarchies can ruin anyone.

I'm having trouble making up my mind about where this book falls, shelf-wise. Do I put it on my fantasy-adventure shelf? My weird-fun-creatures shelf? My young-adult-fic shelf? There's not much I can say about this one without spoiling it, so I'll leave it at this: Get this book out of your library - preferably a copy with well-worn and slightly yellowed pages - and read it at bedtime. You will get no sleep whatsoever and you will enjoy it, I think. It's not the most original storyline out there, but in my opinion fairly well-written - and the photos are a fun and unique touch.
