so far so good
My boyfriend is reading this book now and won't put it down. He's bought Capote's first book already in anticipation of finishing In cold blood. I can't wait. Update: Just finished and this was the first book I can remember savoring. Like, I'm going to go buy 2 new magazines and read them first so I don't have to finish the last 20 pages of this book. It was excellent.
Superb storytelling and fascinating angle on the history and current affairs of East Africa. Hartley is a journalist based in Kenya. Even if you are not interested in East Africa I think you will find some resonance and inspiration to write, travel, or at least get out of your office and into some meaningful mischief. The Zanzibar Chest is not only the heartbreak of Somalia or Rwanda or Kenya falling apart but the trials and tribulations of a twenty to thirty something writer in his personal pursuits of love, passion, and the ghosts of his father and friends of the colonial history of Britain in the horn of Africa and the Arabian peninsula.
