An enjoyable YA, this is set in a London that is entirely not like London, where everything that is unwanted goes to live including broken umbrellas, unwritten books, bits of rubbish, milk cartons, etc. It follows the quest setup with various characters gathered along the way and a fairly unlikely heroine. In some ways this could be considered along the lines of Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. A similar fairytale concept but with a modern feel and modern language.

Death is haunted by humans. He sees their souls as colors as they depart from the world. So many of them pass before him that they tend to blur together...but one story stands out - that of the Book Thief. Death narrates the story of Liesel Meminger, a girl given up by her mother at a young age to foster parents. In the span of a few years, she loses her brother, any link to her mother, and many close friends and family during World War II-era Germany. She gains just as much, however, from her experiences, such as the ability to read (and more importantly, write). The Book Thief is a story of hope and survival in the bleakest of circumstances.
