I attended church with Dr. Barker all of my early life never knowing the role he played in the foundation of early environmental psychology and never learning that the majority of his studies and publishings were written using my small hometown and it's children as their basis. My father and his friends were the subjects of the majority of his writings and their childhoods portrayed throughout each of his studies so for me these read like novels despite their educational and psychological nature. It is funny how we just adapt to our surroundings never fully looking at the people who are woven in and out of our memories. One more of many little things I have learned about my early existance that make me proud of where I came from. It's too bad that such a small town with seemingly little to be proud of does not embrace and even hale their many accomplishments and the accomplished themselves.
This book is a must read for any history buff. Vowell is your kindred spirit. You know all the times you thought you were weird...? Well, at least you're not weird alone. Laugh out loud funny over and over again. Like all of Vowell's books, I'd recommend audio book, though. Her voice & intonation are perfect for the delivery...
