Meh.
This was a good book but not a great book. It was a much lighter read than I expected!
I enjoyed Preston's earlier "Hot Zone" about Ebola, but found this book about smallpox to be a much more useful primer given the disease's far greater historical impact and potential (through Russian weaponization) to wipe us out as a species. Unfortunately, Preston tends to devote more time to discussing the quirks and ambitions of various individual scientists than I'd like. I feel the same way about his books as I do about the trend in televised Olympics to waste half an hour on each athlete's backstory - less filler, more meat please!
